President Obama visits Kotzebue

Regional Elders Council and Northwest Arctic Borough President Larry Westlake, Northwest Arctic Borough Mayor Reggie Joule and Kotzebue Mayor Maija Lukin took an unscheduled ride with President Obama in the motorcade. Youth Leaders talked about shaking the president’s hand. Folks who lined up in mukluks and fur parkas on Second Avenue chatted about how the president waved to them as he made his way to Air Force One before departing.

What many people didn’t see on that September afternoon was the effort of eight regional organizations. For weeks, NANA, with our partners at the Northwest Arctic Borough (NAB), Maniilaq Association, City of Kotzebue, Native Village of Kotzebue, Northwest Arctic Borough School District (NWABSD), Kikikitargruk Inupiat Corp. (KIC), and Kotzebue Electric Authority (KEA) worked with the White House advance team to prepare for the visit.

Quyaana to everyone in Kotzebue and the region for your hospitality and hard work. Thanks to you, the event will be remembered by all for a very long time.
