Representatives from Teck Resource Limited and Teck Alaska Incorporated, the company that manages Red Dog Mine, visited the Northwest Arctic Borough School District in Kotzebue on Wednesday.  They donated $150,000 to the Youth Leaders Program, a suicide prevention and youth leadership program based in the Northwest Arctic schools.

The Youth Leaders program has been an integral part of the Northwest Arctic Borough School District for the past three years.  The temporary grant funding for the program was set to run out this year. “Their generous donation is keeping the program alive in the Northwest Arctic,” says Michelle Woods, the counselor in charge of the program.

Teck found out about the program through Jim Kulas, Red Dog Mine’s Environmental and Public Affairs Manager, who had heard of the Youth Leaders’ success from Tom Baker, a Kotzebue Youth Leader. Teck and Kulas recognized the importance of  supporting the program’s goals of youth leadership and suicide prevention.

The Northwest Arctic Borough School District thanks Teck for their generous donation to our Youth Leaders program.
