The Star of the Northwest Magnet School combines the resources of secondary and post-secondary institutions within the Northwest Arctic Borough to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience for students in grades 11-14.
Building on the need for specialized education in rural Alaska to prepare students for careers in high-demand fields, Star has tailored curricula that allows students to concentrate their studies along one of four chosen career pathways: health care, education, process technology and culinary arts.
Students graduating from Star are career ready, having gained the skills and knowledge needed through their coursework to continue their education or step out on their chosen career path as outlined in their Personal Learning and Career Plans (PLCPs).
"STAR is a vision that has been a long time coming," said NANA President and CEO Wayne Westlake. "It took commitment and partnership to make this amazing opportunity become a reality for our young people. This school is perfect for those students who want to explore career opportunities at home. I would encourage students and parents who are looking to build skill sets that allow youth to stay in the region to learn more about what STAR can offer."
Applications for the 2015-2016 school year are now being accepted. If you'd like to learn more about the statewide Star of the Northwest Magnet School you can visit www.atcstar.com.
