Representatives from Teck, the company that manages Red Dog Operations, announced yesterday that Teck will donate $1.25 million over the next five years to the Northwest Arctic Borough School District Youth Leaders Program - a suicide prevention and youth leadership program based in the Northwest Arctic schools.

"The Youth Leaders Program has dramatically improved student health and is now recognized as one of the most successful youth programs in the state of Alaska," said School Superintendent Dr. Norm Eck in a press release sent by the school district. "Teck's generous donation will ensure this successful program continues to operate for the next five years."

The Youth Leaders program has been an integral part of the NWABSD since its inception in 2008. Over that period, the district has gone from having one of the highest suicide rates in the State of Alaska to zero suicides in the 2010 - 2011 school year.
