Iñupiaq is the indigenous language of the Iñupiat people in Northwest Alaska. In the beginning, all Iñupiat spoke Iñupiaq or a sub-dialect. As with many other ethnic groups, as contact with Westerners increased, the ability to speak and understand Iñupiaq decreased. Today, more than half of the people in the region are not fluent in Iñupiaq.
The Iñupiaq Word of the Week (IWOW) seeks to educate the public about the Iñupiaq language. IWOW is brought to you by NANA Regional Corporation and the NANA family of companies.
