Over the river and through the woods
With seven weeks of back-to-back travel behind me, during this Thanksgiving season, spending time at home with my three children is the first thing I will give thanks for. My job is the next. This most recent blitz started with travel to villages in the NANA Region, where board members had the opportunity to share good news with our owners: 2006 meant a $7 per share dividend and $810 million in revenues. From there, it was off to Seattle and San Francisco where I participated in the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco board meetings. The following week, the Akima board met in Charlotte where we reviewed performance and set targets for the future. This week, it was off to Houston to hear about Ikun, one the newest NANA companies that sells natural gas to customers in the lower 48. Our trip to Houston confirmed the tremendous business opportunities for NANA companies to pursue in the oil and gas industry. As a company, we have countless reasons to be thankful. My hope during this holiday season is that this message finds you also celebrating the rewards of good friends, good food and cherished family. Happy Thanksgiving.
TKC Tech designs audio tour of Smithsonian exhibit
Project Manager Fritz Westlake (left) demonstrates the audio tour PDA developed by TKC Tech subsidiary.
On November 1, the Qivliq company TKC Technology Solutions, successfully launched the introduction of “In the Beginning: Bibles Before the Year 1000,” an audio tour at the Smithsonian Institution Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C. The exhibition presents more than 70 of the earliest biblical artifacts in existence, including pages and fragments written in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Ethiopian and Coptic—many on display for the first time in the United States. It took two years to assemble from 16 museums around the world.
TKC Tech subsidiary Lynxnet LLC developed the audio tour, allowing exhibit visitors to hear the voice of curator Michelle P. Brown. A handheld personal digital assistant (PDA) lets the visitor choose the order in which they look at the manuscripts and the length of time they spend at each display. The time limit was the biggest challenge, Fritz Westlake, Project Manager said, adding that the job was very interesting and TKC Tech hopes to work on similar Smithsonian projects. Justin Rummel coordinated the technical development of the MP3 program and handheld content, and a 25-member team also contributed to development and logistics.

United Way Pledges Due
NANA’s 2006 United Way team is only $25,000 away from reaching its $125,000 goal, Kristina Patrick, Shareholder Development Manager and campaign co-chair, said, adding that pledge forms need to be turned in by Friday, November 24th. Several employees have found creative ways to raise money, she said. Employees at the Benson office donated items for the Harvest Ball and Silent Auction, with all proceeds going to United Way.
“NANA is active in United Way because our contributions support more than 50 non-profits in Alaska, including NANA regional organizations like the Aqqaluk Trust and Maniilaq Association,” Helvi Sandvik, NANA Development Corporation President said.
Reindeer and Black Bean Chili
Courtesy of Traditions Catering. After you’ve had your fill of turkey soup and turkey sandwiches, a big pot of this hearty chili will spice up the rest of your holiday. Chefs at Traditions Catering, part of NANA Management Services, say you can substitute another ground meat, but don’t blame them if it isn’t as good as the reindeer version.
Ingredients
- 1 T olive oil
- 1 red onion, chopped
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1.5 pounds ground reindeer
- 3 tsp. chili powder
- 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 1/2 tsp. cumin
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper
- 2 16 oz. cans chopped tomatoes
- 2 16 oz. cans tomato sauce
- 2-3 16 oz. cans black beans
- 1 bunch parsley
- 1 cup water
- 2 cubes beef base
- 1/4 tsp. salt
Directions
Heat oil in stockpot over medium-high heat. Add onion, green pepper, and garlic to pot and stir well to coat. Sweat with lid on pot for about five minutes. Remove ingredients from pot and set aside. Using the same pot, brown reindeer meat, breaking into small pieces. When cooked, add chili powder, paprika, cumin, pepper, tomatoes, tomato sauce, black beans and cooked vegetables. Stir well. Simmer for at least 30 minutes.
