Vol. 1, No. 7• November 2, 2006
One vote, one voice
Voting is not just a right—it is a responsibility. While more and more Americans do not take this privilege seriously, as the November 7 general election approaches, think back on the countless stories we’ve all heard about one vote making one very big difference. Historically, voting is the voice that has helped advance tolerance, our right to worship, and lifestyle and gender preferences. Where would we be without these freedoms? Everyone always seems to know the right answer—after the fact. Read up on the issues, learn about the candidates, and participate in the electoral process by helping elect responsible leaders who will continue to advance our freedoms and our future.
Now we’re talking
A glimmer of light is on the horizon as the “Deltek® Team” converts the company-wide network to provide a common language for all NANA businesses with software solutions that improve performance and streamline operations.
Since the project started in April 2005, all but one of NANA’s companies has installed Deltek Costpoint®, software that tracks, manages and reports on every aspect of a project business, from budgets, schedule, expenses, purchasing, and cost allocation, to billing, profitability and regulatory compliance. Currently, Qivliq, Akmaaq and KPSG systems are being converted. DOWL, LLC will be the last company to start its conversion, scheduled to begin in October 2007.
“We have been able to meet people across our system and communicate in ways we never did before,” said Brad Osborne, Project Manager.
The project team includes Frank Long, who Brad calls his “set up guy,” Doll Garoutte, Human Resources Coordinator; Cathleen Vestal, Benefits Coordinator; Felicia Hubbard, Payroll Coordinator; Murray Glover, formerly a Deltek consultant and now a NANA employee; and Valerie Clewis, Payroll Lead.
Spotlight—Three Wins for NANA
ANMC renews NANA contract
The NANA team recently won the bid to continue to serve the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. As we enter into a new five-year contract that begins in January, we also will be able to offer new programs to our customers, the patients being treated at the hospital. At Your Request in-room dining is an innovative feature of the NANA food service contract to provide restaurant-style dining for patients.
Led by Anchorage Area Manager Robin Wade, the contract bid team put together the proposal based on this new concept that allows patients to choose from various menu selections when they are ready to eat. At Your Request also includes special menus for children. A team of professional hosts will serve the meals.
It’s ‘BOUT time
Buy Once Use Twice—known as BOUT—received British Petroleum’s (BP) Helio Award, recognizing the outstanding achievements of BP operations and its partners. The BOUT program, started by NANA Management Services water and wastewater treatment team, recycles and processes water that is then injected into gas-fired turbines that produce the electricity for Milne Point Oil Field on the North Slope. Besides saving money, BOUT reduces the amount of surface water required for operating Milne Point and reduces the safety concerns associated with water trucks driving across the field.
Congratulations to Larry Cogdill, NMS Maintenance Supervisor, and his team for their creative thinking!
All in good taste
Purcell Security, known as NMS Security outside of Alaska, was recently selected to provide security services to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) West Coast campus located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. “This is Purcell’s first contract outside of Alaska, said Ron Otte, Director of Operations, adding that he expects this contract lead to other opportunities outside of Alaska.

In addition to 15 acres of vineyards, the campus includes several well known culinary businesses: Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies,” Sutter Home Organic Garden, Cannard Herb Garden, Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant, DeBaun Theater, Ken and Grace De Baun Café, and the Spice Islands Marketplace store.
