One a day for better health
Those who know of my liking for Snickers® and latté lunches and M & M’s® breaks might roll their eyes if I started dishing out advice about healthy eating habits. Although we all have our vices, the fact remains: the medical community has volumes of studies that conclusively prove that people who maintain healthy eating and lifestyle habits have a better quality of life and live longer. It isn’t easy to change one’s lifestyle. Instead, consider the tip a friend passed onto me: do one healthy thing for yourself every day—eat one more apple, have a salad for lunch, take the steps instead of the elevator, go to the health fair, or even consider eating one less … Snickers® bar.
Risk management services streamlined
NANA Risk Management Services is reorganizing and streamlining its operations in response to NANA’s growth and increased needs for efficiency.
“The work we do is very detailed, and we are hoping that by having specific contact people for each company, we will be able to provide service efficiently,” said Terry Simoni, NANA Director of Risk Management and Employee Benefits. Part of these efforts will include matching the department’s services one on one with NANA companies.
A risk management department looks at ways to increase profitability by reducing liability in safety, legal, financial and behavioral areas. Examples of risk management are obtaining insurance policies and providing rate information for contract bids, providing hold harmless language, and conducting follow-up investigations on vehicle accident and workers compensation claims.
For risk management seminar dates held throughout the NANA family of companies, or for risk-related questions, call (907) 265-4132 and ask for your risk management representative.

Is your smoke alarm ready?
Smoke alarms can save lives—if they work properly. About 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes where there were no working smoke alarms. A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm provides early warning signals, increasing the chances for those in the home to escape.
Smoke alarm maintenance and installation tips:
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Also install them both inside and outside any sleeping areas, especially if you sleep with your bedroom door closed.
- Don’t forget. Replace smoke alarm batteries when you change your clocks for daylight saving time on October 29.
- Keep smoke alarms clean. Dust can make smoke alarms ineffective. Use a hand-held vacuum or attachment to vacuum around your smoke alarm.
- Replace the battery right away. If you hear a beeping noise, it means your battery is low.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Smoke alarms wear out. Write the purchase date on the back so you know when to replace it.
