It takes two
A common question I am asked is, “What is the difference between NANA Development Corporation and NANA Regional Corporation?” A simple explanation was provided this past March, when during our Annual Meeting I reintroduced myself to Clara Dawn, Marie Greene’s little granddaughter. She gave a simple little girl’s reply. “I know you,” she said. “You are my Nan’s partner.”
Clara Dawn summarized it all. NANA Regional Corporation and NANA Development Corporation work together, for the common benefit of NANA shareholders.
Our organizational structure, which is designed from a corporate governance perspective, also allows proper focus to accomplish our objectives. The structure is simple: all NANA businesses are owned by NANA Development Corporation. In turn, NANA Development Corporation is the only business owned by NANA Regional Corporation, Inc. NDC oversees business development and administration, revenues, profits, jobs, and shareholder development and training. NRC is responsible for land management, resource development decisions, subsistence issues, education and training, and delivering all shareholder services and benefits, including cultural programs, scholarships, training, advocacy, and dividends.
NRC President Marie Greene did a great job explaining the relationship when she recently addressed the Resource Development Council of Alaska, using Red Dog Mine as a textbook example of this fine-tuned relationship, and how the two bodies work together to accomplish NANA’s mission. Worldwide, Red Dog is a showcase example of how Native Alaskans and other special populations can involve themselves in resource development so that it benefits their indigenous people. When the decision was made to develop Red Dog, NANA Development Corporation began developing businesses and business relationships so that we could deliver as many support services as possible to the mine. In delivering services, we are active participants in the success of the operation and we maximize the benefits. In the very beginning, we knew that our involvement would be critical to the success of the mine. Today, 14 NANA companies provide services to Red Dog, from engineering to facility management, trucking, barging, drilling, oil and lubricant sales, and soils testing. All of these companies employ shareholders as well as many other Alaskans. Our mine is a critical stimulant in Alaska’s overall economy, and the income our businesses that support the mine earn is brought back to NANA Regional Corporation to be used for the benefit our shareholders. NANA Consulting Services
NANA Consulting Services (NCS) is a subsidiary of NDC-owned ASCG, Inc. It provides schools, Native American tribes, non-profit organizations, and others with planning, facilitation, and research. “Our work is diverse, but what it all comes down to is listening, interpreting and analyzing, then bringing recommendations back to the client,” Lisa Reagan, Senior Planner, said.
As facility planners, NCS leads multiple stakeholders through a decision-making process for the construction or renovation of buildings. Ultimately, NCS articulates key decisions, documents factors that will influence the project over time, guides the architectural design process, and establishes preliminary budgets. The company specializes in educational facilities.
NCS also does master planning for land development and capital master planning to create five- to 10-year budgets for improvements. Capital planners work with stakeholders to assess resources, staffing or enrollment, demographic trends, and administrative or governmental policies. These long-range plans guide land purchases, zoning, and funding. Fiscal planning involves economic analysis, market feasibility studies, grant writing and research, operations efficiency analysis, and other services that help clients improve efficiency and boost their bottom line.
“Collectively, we have backgrounds in everything from interior design and business administration, to arts and psychology,” Jessica Gonzalez, Financial/Facility Planner said. "This allows us to bring a high level of customer service to a wide range of people and cultures." For more information on NCS, visit www.NanaConsulting.com

NANA’s Alaska Run for Women team joined more than 5000 runners and walkers in support of friends and family members who have experienced breast cancer. The run raises money for cancer research and funds breast cancer awareness campaigns. Organized by NANA legal intern, Andrea Greene, the NANA team included several breast cancer survivors including Kathleen Kidd who said, “ Please remind folks out there that there are a lot of agencies/clinics that offer free mammograms; especially during the month of October (breast cancer awareness month) and that ‘early detection is your best protection’. It saved my life.”
