Anchorage, AK Message from Helvi Sandvik, NDC president
This is how we grow
Growth Through Diversity—this is the thinking that guides our growth strategy as we look for new business development opportunities around the world. What does Growth Through Diversity mean?
- We are diverse—we consider opportunities in many different industries
- We are growing—we never lose sight of the future
- We are responsive—we follow economic indicators
- We deliver excellence—we exceed expectations
Currently, our companies employ more than 5,500 people worldwide, providing hundreds of critical services such as engineering, architecture, hospitality, security, transportation logistics, government contracting, telecommunications, mining, and oilfield support services. In Alaska, our business experts are helping villages protect their homes, schools, and businesses from Arctic storms. We are also building critical important infrastructure to improve the quality of life. Nationwide, our companies lead the way in finding solutions for clients who are some of the largest businesses in the country. And globally, the NANA family of companies is relied on by the military to safely and cost effectively support Americans in carrying out critical missions.

An 1800 foot by 12 feet high retaining wall is in service protecting the NANA region village of Kivalina. Living on a barrier island on the north side of the Chukchi Sea, Kivalina residents for years have been searching for the means to relocate the village, but have been unsuccessful. In the mean time, the sea, crashing against the beach during storms, had begun to threaten the town.
“The rate of erosion is so significant that we realized that we were going to lose infrastructure and maybe even lives,” said Tom Bolen, public service director for the Northwest Arctic Borough.
The Borough was successful in obtaining Denali Commission funds to build a retaining wall. NANA Pacific received a contract to design a wall utilizing Hesco Concertainers, an erosion control product that has been used successfully in other parts of the state.
“The method served our needs,” said Bolen. “The product is easily shipped, it uses local labor, local materials and provides the level of protection we need.”
The nearly-completed wall received its first test during an early season storm on September 13. A portion of the wall did sustain damage, however no village real estate was lost. NANA Pacific engineers are performing an analysis to determine the best way to improve the Hesco Concertainer performance, minimize future storm damage, and provide protection for Kivalina.
“This is an example of our commitment to the Northwest Arctic Borough and the NANA region,” said Stuart Parks of NANA Pacific. “We are always looking for opportunities where we can use our employee’s skills and experience to support our shareholders and their needs.”
