Five Points of Success
Even corporations have New Year resolutions. As NANA moves into 2007, we celebrate
the achievements of the past 12 months, while remembering that these were
realized because at every level, we continue to strive for even greater
quality and greater customer satisfaction, while lowering the cost of
doing business. Like the classic five-pointed star, NANA has identified
critical focal points necessary to drive even more success in 2007:
GoalGenerate greater than $1 billion in revenues.
ProfitIncrease the profit margin earned on our work, to
bring about increased profitability company wide.
DiversificationStrengthen our company overall by growing each of
our diverse businesses.
ChangeEvaluate and implement appropriate modifications to corporate
structure and business systems to bring about improvements.
EfficiencyAt every level, look for measurable ways to better manage
time and resources.
Efficiency at Every Level
As we focus on efficiency there are things we can do every day to reduce our costs. For example, according to NANA's IT department, your computer operating system and screen will last longer if you turn everything offboth the monitor and the CPUwhen you are going to be away from your computer for 30 minutes or more. If you are going to be away for 15 minutes or more, leave the CPU on, but turn off your monitor.
The monitor uses the most energy and simply switching if off when not
in use will cut energy use, prolong the life of the equipment, save money
and benefit the environment by reducing electricity consumption.
NANA/Colt Donates Building Design to Camp Siivu
Plans for a new power generation building for Camp Siivuniigvik are complete, including two generators and an area for snow machine storage and repairs that will be housed in the 24'X24' building. Design services were donated by NANA/Colt Engineering.
"NANA/Colt has hosted numerous interns and we have supported NANA's scholarship programs, but this time we really appreciated the chance to use our engineering skills to benefit the NANA region," Ben Cuaresma, head engineer of the NANA/Colt civil structural department, said, adding that employees Mike Cutler, Monty Hart and Grant Smith contributed 150 hours to the design and engineering of the structure.
Camp Siivuniigvik is owned by the Aqqaluk Trust. It is a cultural camp
located in the northern part of the Kobuk River Delta, 30 miles east of
Kotzebue. A summer program is operated by the Aqqaluk Trust for children
of the NANA Region, to help them learn more about their culture, heritage
and communities.
Scoring for NANA
Race McCleery,
CEO, Qivliq, LLC
It's hard to imagine not being successful when your first name is Race. As the Chief Executive Officer of Qivliq, the NANA company based in Fairfax, Virginia, Race McCleery brings more than two decades of financial and operations experience to Qivliq, including an in-depth understanding of financial management in aggressive growth, entrepreneurial companies. Before being promoted to lead Qivliq, he was the Chief Financial Officer for the company. Prior to that, he served as Controller and CFO of TKC Communications, one of Qivliq's subsidiaries.
While earning his accounting degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), Race was also known for his accomplishments on the basketball court. As a senior forward, in 1989 he achieved his career high by scoring 27 points and nine rebounds in the 94-74 win against Sacramento State to take the Great Northwest Conference title for his team in the biggest upset in UAA's history. Today, this same focus continues to help him lead the Qivliq team to success.
"I am very competitive in nature and do not like to losein business, if you are not making money, you are losing," Race said from his Orlando, Florida office. "I am able to utilize my financial background and experience in this current job as we assess continual business opportunities and whether the returns on investments will be satisfactory to our shareholders."
Qivliq provides portfolio management and administrative support services to a group of nine businesses that operate a diverse project portfolio including facility operations and support, telecommunications, IT, construction management, aerospace related services, apparel manufacturing, and project management. Race says, "We have experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. As we move forward, Qivliq is committed to continued success and looks forward to delivering increased profits to our owners."
Although Race lives in Florida and Qivliq is based in Virginia, he says
that with companies in four states and Puerto Rico, he spends about three
weeks a month on the road. "I have an incredible team of senior leadership
based in Virginia who are able to effectively manage any day-to-day interactions
in my absence."
The envelope, please...
Every year, NANA surveys all of our employees and clients. The information
lets us know what we are doing right, and where there is room for improvement.
Over the next few months, business unit managers will be sharing this
information with employees and will help develop plans for addressing
findings from the survey. Thank you to all who participated and congratulations
to the survey drawing winners!
