This Is NANA

sunsetWELCOME

NANA is one of 13 Alaska Native regional corporations created under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. ANCSA was created by the United States Congress as compensation for the loss and/or use of the Alaska Native people's traditional land.

Revenues generated by ANCSA enabled Alaska Natives to build corporations that exist to provide jobs and social services such as healthcare and education for our people. Over the past thirty-six years, these Native corporations have become a vital part of Alaska's economy, a significant voice in state and national politics, and, collectively, one of Alaska's largest employers. But more important, Native corporations have brought much needed jobs and services to Alaska’s First People that would otherwise not exist. Native corporations have triumphed by achieving consistently exceptional results in adverse conditions and by accomplishing goals that were deemed impossible by other companies.

NANA is one of Alaska's largest Native corporations. We are organized into two branches: NANA Regional Corporation, Inc. (NRC) and NANA Development Corporation (NDC). NRC is the parent company that oversees NDC, NANA's business division, and directly manages NANA's cultural and shareholder support programs.

NANA's shareholders are the descendants of the first people to populate Northwest Alaska over 10,000 years ago. Although we are known in much of the world by the name "Eskimos," we call ourselves "Iñupiat," which means "The People." We have succeeded in our beautiful but often harsh environment because we live by a core set of values, such as "Hard Work," "Respect For Others," "Humility" and "Cooperation." We cherish these values and teach them to our children daily. As it turns out, not only do our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat values help us draw together as families and as a people, they also make a terrific corporate philosophy. Please read more about our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat values here.

NANA was conceived by a group of villagers in the mid-sixties in a small village above the Arctic Circle. We have since grown into a major corporation that realizes about one billion dollars in annual revenues and employs over 7,000 people in countries around the world. NANA excels in such varied professional disciplines as engineering, mining, heavy industry service, and hotel operations. Read more about NANA companies here.
